About Jayna Nelson
 ﷯Jayna Nelson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska into a musical family and began to study piano as soon as she could reach the keyboard. She grew up in the performing arts, studying music, theatre and dance. At age 9 she began to study the flute as well,and at 14 began playing with the Union College orchestra and the Wesleyan College Orchestra. At age 14 she won the Baldwin Junior Keyboard award and at age 17, the National Music Teachers' Association Competition on flute.She studied piano with Beth Miller Harrod and Grant Johannesen. She graduated from the University of Toronto in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Louis Moyse, Andre Jaunet and Jeanne Baxtresser, and marimba with Beverly Johnston. She also worked as a piano accompanist for student recitals. For the next two years, she served on the faculty at University of Toronto teaching chamber music and metronome techniques. There she premiered a work by Mario Davidovsky: Synchronism #1 for Flute & Electronic Tape under the direction of the composer. She also was principal flutist with Symphony Canada and Opera Omaha. In 1983 she attended the Banff Centre Jazz program headed by Dave Holland and studied with Anthony Braxton, Don Thompson, Dave Liebman and John Abercrombie. Jayna moved to New York in 1989. She continues to work as a Classical and Jazz performer, producer, composer, arranger and educator. She has designed and implemented integrated arts curriculum for New York area schools and summer camps and has lectured and given seminars at the University of Nebraska, University of Georgia and the Julliard School of Music and also has maintained a private teaching studio for over 30 yrs. She has performed at the St. Lawrence Center, The Royal Alexandra Theatre and in the Toronto DuMaurier, NYC Panasonic, NYC JVC Jazz festivals, the Knitting Factory, Woodstock Maverick Concert series, the Kleinert/James Gallery, Woodstock, NY. and Bard College. Jayna apprenticed with master flute makers Jack Goosman and Jeff Weissman and ran her own repair company for 15 years. She has been a flute technician and consultant for Anthony Braxton, Dave Liebman, Joe Giardullo, Jeanne Baxtresser, Steve Slagle, Joannie Madden, Carlos Malta, Hermeto Pascoal, Bruce Gremo and James Moody. In 1990, Jayna invented a sensory motor integration system for teaching music which has been tactilized for the visually impaired and blind population. The system is called Musical Mythology and has been used by Jayna in her teaching studio for over 20 years, both for teaching, and as a music therapy tool for special needs students From 2005 to 2008, Jayna trained and was on staff as a neurofeedback and Interactive Metronome® clinician at the Stone Mountain Counseling Center in Tillson, NY. She is a Certified Interactive Metronome Therapist and a member of the Biofeedback and Cognitive Neuroscience of Georgia, and was the featured presenter at the May 2014 meeting. The topic:” Interactive Metronome® and Heartmath™ as combined healing modalities for repetitive head injury and peak performance training with Mixed Martial Arts”, was a presentation of the results of a two year study with MMA participants and instructors at the Hard Core Gym in Athens, GA.
